A man from the Nagaur district of Rajasthan reportedly sleeps for 20 to 25 days a month, or 300 days a year, due to a rare medical condition called axis hypersomnia. Purkharam, 42, a resident of Bhadwa village, dubbed a real-life ‘Kumbhakarna’ by villagers, can operate his grocery store only five days a month, Zee News reported.

According to the report, his condition was diagnosed 23 years ago and has impacted his life in such a way that his relatives must bathe and feed him while he sleeps.

Axis hypersomnia can be described as a chronic neurological disorder. sleep disorder leading to daytime sleepiness and / or long hours of sleep (more than 9-10 hours in 24 hours)

According to a study published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), hypersomnia, a complaint of excessive daytime sleepiness or drowsiness, affects four to six percent of the population, with an impact on the daily life of the patient.

Treatment and prevention

According to Dr. Mahajan, treatment can be based on medications and antidepressants. He added that to prevent this condition, one must stay away from caffeine. “Don’t drink alcohol right before you sleep, as it can interfere with your sleep,” he said.
